Guidelines for authors: EPD
Submission   Style   Acceptance

Submission
Submission of a paper implies acceptance of the following conditions:
(1) the paper reports unpublished work;
(2) the paper is not being submitted to any other journal;
(3) you are fully authorised to submit the material for publication;
(4) you agree to act as a referee for other submissions to the journal, bearing in mind that each submission generates the need for three reports.
(5) if accepted, the paper will not be republished without the consent of the publishers.

Papers should be submitted as Word files, in rich text format (rtf), or as PDFs by email to the editorial office at epd.societyandspace@durham.ac.uk. All figures should be merged in the document and should be low resolution (note: higher-resolution figures will be required once the paper is accepted, see Acceptance below).
Papers should be written in English, in nonsexist, nonracist language.
Please provide a word count for the article (including notes and references). Papers should be double-spaced and in 12-point font size. Articles for the journal should be between 7,000 and 10,000 words and reduced commensurably if they include maps, pictures, or diagrams. Longer papers will be returned for reduction before review.
A separate title page, with full contact details (including email addresses) of all authors, should be attached. This will be detached during the refereeing stage to maintain the anonymity of the author. If the first author is not the contact author this should be clearly indicated. Identifying information should not be included in PDF files.
Papers should be formatted as per the style guidelines provided below, and particular attention should be paid to the style of references and accepted figure formats. The editor's decision is final, and acceptance of a paper for publication implies assignment of copyright to Pion Ltd.

Style
All papers will be copyedited in accordance with the house style of Pion Ltd. Both British and US English are acceptable, though consistency is essential. However, punctuation for both US and British spelling should be according to British style (outside the quotation marks). Spelling is subject to Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Double quotation marks are used only for direct quotations and must be accompanied by a complete citation with author, date, and page number; single quotation marks should be used, otherwise.

Figures

  • Figures should initially be submitted in low resolution TIFF format or in EPS format. Other formats are not accepted (JPEG, GIF, BMP, Powerpoint, Excel, etc). If the paper is accepted, separate higher resolution figures will be required by the publishers (see Acceptance below).
  • The author must obtain copyright permission for any copyrighted figures and must pay any necessary fees. Copies of permission should be included with the manuscript.
  • All figures and tables should be mentioned in the text and should be numbered according to the order in which they are mentioned.
  • Figures should be submitted in black and white unless colour is really necessary. Colour printing is expensive and is charged at cost, though, alternatively, colour figures can be made available online free of charge. Any figures intended for colour printing, either in print or online, should be indicated as such.

    References

  • The full list of all references cited in the paper should appear at the end of the text, in alphabetical order by author, and in ascending chronological order for each author. They should be formatted in the house style (see example references).
  • References must be cited in the text, and should be cited alphabetically in the format shown by the following examples: Batty, 2003; 2005a; 2005b; Batty and Xie, 1994; Webster et al, 1999b.
  • Where more than one reference appears for the same year, labels a, b, c, etc should be used, in the order in which the papers are cited.
  • For references with more than eight authors, the first eight authors are listed followed by 'et al'. For in-text citations with three or more authors, the first two authors should be cited along with 'et al'.
  • Publications without an author should be cited as 'Anon'.
  • Any unpublished material, or material published by an organisation or department (such as conference proceedings) must be accompanied by full contact details of availability, as shown in the example references (it is not sufficient, for example, to provide the name and year of a conference and the place at which it was held).
  • A full contact address is required for any organisation.
  • Acts of Parliament, statutes, government publications, legal judgments, etc must be fully referenced as shown in the example references.
  • First and last pages should be provided for all articles published in journals or books.

    Mathematics
    If mathematics feature in the manuscript, care should be taken that they are formatted as per our mathematics style.

    Acceptance

    Upon acceptance, separate higher-resolution electronic versions of the figures (in the allowed formats described above, with at least 300dpi resolution for greyscale TIFFs, and at least 600dpi resolution for black and white TIFFs) are required. These should be sent to the publishers, Pion Ltd, at amye@pion.co.uk or at the following address:

    Amye Kenall
    Pion Ltd
    207 Brondesbury Park
    London, NW2 5JN.

    Papers will be copyedited, typeset, and proofread, after which hardcopy proofs will be sent to the contact author.

    Upon publication of the paper, the main author will receive a pdf of the published version and a copy of the issue in which the paper appears.
