Map analysis: description or modelling?
R P Haining
Received 2 October 1981, in revised form 25 January 1982
Abstract. The role of descriptive measures of map pattern for lattice distributions and point processes and the usefulness of proceeding beyond these measures to the construction of statistical models of the data is discussed. For certain problems of estimation, forecasting, and equilibrium process modelling, it is argued that model building does add to an interpretation of map structure.
